The Pompeian Room’s bright acoustic and luxurious surroundings will provide a fitting setting for the West Coast debut of a unique ensemble of four internationally-acclaimed artists who have enjoyed success as soloists with major symphonies. Two years ago these women joined forces to create a piano quartet. An immediate success, the ensemble is in great demand with performances at prestigious venues, which now include the Doheny Mansion. Led by Baiba Skride, a Latvian violinist celebrated for her “inherently and unfailingly beautiful tone” (The Strad), they’ll bring flawless precision and breathtaking musicality to piano quartets by Mozart (No. 1 in g, K. 478), Brahms (in g, Op. 25), and Mahler — whose piano quartet is his only surviving piece of chamber music without voice.
