Camerata Pacifica’s November edition of “Why Beethoven?” opens with a classical jewel by Mozart; his Duo for Violin & Viola in G Major, K 423, before moving to one of Beethoven’s middle period string quartets; Op. 74 in E-Flat Major, “Harp”. This is Beethoven’s time of transformation, his works evolving from classicism to romanticism, and interestingly this quartet was his first to be published singly — previous quartets were published as sets of six and three. Now, however, each quartet would be so individual to warrant its own opus number. This program’s journey to Romanticism concludes with Louis Vierne’s C Minor Piano Quintet Op. 42, an anguished response to the horrors of the First World War which took the life of his 17 year-old son.
