At the foot of the San Gabriel Mountains, the “Sport of Kings” has attracted royalty, Hollywood’s elite and the stars of Thoroughbred racing for decades. In a grand 1930s Regency Moderne ballroom, you’re “off to the races” with a nine-member ensemble of winds and strings performing their own arrangement of the Finale from the William Tell Overture (popularly known as The Lone Ranger theme music) along with transcriptions of Strauss’s playful Til Eulenspiegel, Michael Haydn’s (Franz Joseph’s younger brother) lively Divertimento, and others. Longtime Da Camera Society favorite and prize-winning oboist Thomas Gallant, “a player who unites technical mastery with intentness, charm and wit” (The New Yorker),harnesses the energy and excitement of these rising young stars of chamber music as they make their Southern California debut.

Arcadia Festival: Make it “a day at the races”! Arrive early and explore what is considered by many the world’s most beautiful race track. Take self-guided tours of the various historic buildings designed in a combination of Colonial Revival and Streamline Modern architectural styles — settings used in films, from the Marx Brothers 1937 classic A Day at the Races, to 2003’s Seabiscuit. Details and festival packets mailed in May.
