Camerata Pacifica’s “Why Beethoven?” project continues with music by master composers from the United States. For many Aaron Copland provided the quintessence of the American sound and his Duo for Flute and Piano is a prime example. John Harbison’s Songs America Loves to Sing is a clever interpretative approach to popular American song. An American original George Crumb’s 90th birthday has just been celebrated worldwide. His 11 Echoes of Autumn is an amazing exploration of the blending of sound and timbre. Finally, William Bolcom’s ragtime-infused 2nd Violin Sonata will bring the concert to an amiable and proudly American conclusion.
