In Focus culminates with Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 12 in E♭ major (1825), one of the composer’s late string quartets. Beethoven’s six late quartets, written in failing health, were dismissed by musicians and audiences of the day, but are now considered to be among the greatest musical compositions ever. Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 12 is contrasted with Mendelssohn’s Octet, written in the same year, but composed by Mendelssohn when he was just 16 years old.
